Proclamation for 2012 Earthquake Awareness Week
WHEREAS, Feb. 7, 2012, marks the New Madrid Bicentennial remembering the series
of earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 that forever changed the mid-western landscape of
the United States, including the creation of Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee; andWHEREAS, recent disasters in Tennessee, in the United States and around the world
are remind us of the natural threats we face on a daily basis; andWHEREAS, earthquakes present a constant threat of catastrophic damage and loss of
life to Tennesseans, and preparation and awareness of the dangers by the public may
help mitigate these losses; andWHEREAS, on Feb. 7, 2012, at 10:15 a.m., Tennesseans are asked to participate in
the Great Central U.S. Shake Out, a voluntary earthquake exercise, by practicing the
“Drop, Cover &Hold” technique that could help prevent injury during an earthquake;
andWHEREAS, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, the West Tennessee
Seismic Safety Commission, the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake
Research and Information, the Mid-South Association of Contingency Planners, and
many other groups and individuals are joining in this campaign to promote earthquake
awareness and safety for all Tennesseans;NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Haslam, Governor of the State of Tennessee, do hereby
proclaim the week of February 5 to 11,.2012, as
EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS WEEK
in Tennessee and encourage all citizens to join me in this worthy observance.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set
